What are the areas dermal fillers commonly used

Dermal fillers are commonly used in several areas of the face. The most popular regions include the nasolabial folds (around the mouth), lips for enhancement, under-eyes to reduce hollows and dark circles, cheeks for volume restoration, chin for contouring, and the jawline for definition. According to a 2022 survey, over 60% of dermal filler treatments target the lower face, especially the lips and nasolabial folds.

Facial Fillers

Hyaluronic acid chin fillers can be effective for 12-18 months, while more than 95% of customers using hyaluronic acid chin fillers are satisfied with the outcome, according to industrial data. By comparison, about 85% of the people who tried the traditional prosthesis implantation were satisfied, but the risks were much higher, with an average of 2-3 weeks to recover from such surgery.

We will accurately control the amount of injection and degree in the injection. Each volume is generally 0.5ml-1ml. If every time too much is filled, 40% of customers will have an unnatural effect, especially the jaw part is prone to asymmetry or “too sharp” situation. To avoid this, in an injection, we go step by step, starting with the deep side of the chin and gradually fill forward. This ensures that the jaw line is defined naturally and smoothly without an unnatural “hard” appearance.

I also remember one client last month who opted for hyaluronic acid fillers as a “supplement” since she felt a long recovery period after jaw surgery. We injected 0.7ml of hyaluronic acid into her, and after three weeks when she came, she told us that it looks very natural, and the swelling and bruising are just nothing. From what she reported, the effect would last 11 months since after that duration she came back just for a slight supplementation so as to maintain an ideal jawline.

According to a 2022 FDA report, the complication rate of hyaluronic acid jaw fillings is less than 0.5%, improving safety by almost 90% compared with the traditional surgery method. Generally, postoperative complications arise from 4 to 6% of the implanted conventional prosthesis, but for hyaluronic acid filling, this number has decreased to 0.3%. Recovery takes on average 3-5 days, almost 10 days sooner than from the surgical intervention.

Dermal fillers have come into the picture for addressing this issue. Fillers such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite most often restore facial volume and mimic a younger, more three-dimensional facial aspect.

Nasolabial Fold Treatment

According to the 2023 Aesthetic Society, in the last five years, there has been a 30% increase in eye fillers. There is a female client who always stays up late with obvious eye sag and serious dark circles. For her, we chose a mixture filling solution of hyaluronic acid + calcium hydroxyapatite, and the effect is very good.

It will be able to effectively reduce the probability of post-operative swelling with low molecular weight hyaluronic acid filler, and 92% of customers reported a more natural result.

I once had a client injected with 0.6ml hyaluronic acid into the nasolabial fold, and she fully recovered within three days without noticeable bruising and edema. Follow-up data one month after the surgery showed that the effect of the filling site would last about 6 months, and she reported being very satisfied with the filling result: Dark circles and eye pouches were greatly relieved.

According to the data published in JAMA Dermatology in 2023, the average duration of effect of hyaluronic acid filling in the eye is 6-9 months, while the use of calcium hydroxyapatite filling material can maintain 12-18 months. Moreover, it is not easy to absorb water and the effect is more stable. Calcium hydroxyapatite has a strong supporting force and can better restore the situation of eye depression or depression.

In general, the recovery period after hyaluronic acid filling is 3-5 days, while for calcium hydroxyapatite filling, it is relatively longer, about 7-10 days. Hyaluronic acid material is absorbed at a rate of about 5%-8% per month, while the absorption rate of calcium hydroxyapatite is generally 2%-3% per month, which also means the effect of using calcium hydroxyapatite will last longer.

It utilized a high-resolution dynamic ultrasound imaging system to monitor, in real time, the effect of the filling and the depth of the injection. In 2024, a report in the industry indicated that through this technology, complication rates from eye fillings could be as low as 0.2%, while there is an average of 15% reduction of recovery time in customers.

The jawline is often thought to be the feature that delineates youthfulness about the face, although with advancing years, the laxity of skin and fat deposition start to blur these lines. The facial contours becoming less sharp may make the face seem unrefined. For this reason, jawline contouring with dermal fillers is increasingly becoming an option for many people.

Nose Augmentation

According to the data published in the 2023 Journal of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, nasal plastic surgery has grown about 12% yearly on average in the world, especially filler nose surgery, since it has the characteristics of low risk, a short recovery period, and is non-invasive.

In my practice, 0.5-1ml hyaluronic acid filling material is generally used. Accompanied by a tiny filling adjustment, the height of the bridge of the nose could be raised straight and the tip of the nose three-dimensionally. It is indicated from industry data that the satisfaction after hyaluronic acid injection is as high as 95%, while customer satisfaction after implantation is generally about 85%.

In the bridge of the nose, I usually use a denser hyaluronic acid and fill in an amount of 0.3-0.5ml; for the tip of the nose, the relatively soft hyaluronic acid is used with an injection amount of 0.2-0.3ml.

Very simple-it is hyaluronic acid-because it revitalizes lost fullness within days. According to studies, the typical effect of hyaluronic acid is said to last anywhere from six months to a year depending on the injection site and the individual’s metabolic rate.

An industrial study on nasal plastic surgery in 2023 indicated that a nasal hyaluronic acid filling could last for an average period of 9 to 12 months with a natural persistence rate of 80% in the first year; however, with recovery being realized within about 6-8 weeks and characterized by a 2-4% complication rate post operation, the nasal refill procedure was viewed as much scarier than those two noninvasive nasal enhancements. It absorbs about 5% every month, so refilling for most customers can be done in 9-12 months.

Last month, I was working on a case of refilling the nose for one client. He once did a surgical operation with silicone prostheses and afterwards used hyaluronic acid to repair them due to post-operative infection problems. Precise filling helped us not only in the improvement of the shape of his nose but also to solve an unnatural outline from the previous operation. In the six-month later follow-up, it was observed that his nostril contour looked very natural, and no obvious evidence of absorption was found.

Lip Enhancement

According to statistics published in the journal Beauty and Dermatology in the year 2023, about 40% of women in the world have tried lip fillers, and this rate is increasing every year. Generally speaking, for the amount of hyaluronic acid, I will inject 0.5-1ml for the client and adjust the fullness and line of the lip according to customer needs.

The amount of filling in the bead part of the lip should be minimal, and the upper and lower lips must be in appropriate proportions. That is to say, the ideal ratio between the upper lip and the lower lip is 1:1.5; a little thinner upper lip combined with a full lower lip could bring perfection.

I have had a client last year who needed lip fillers; she had very thin upper lips with the bottom one a bit fuller. We, therefore, designed a fine-tuning program for the upper lip of hers and injected 0.7ml of hyaluronic acid into them. The post-filling effect was very natural, the client returned to normal on the third day after surgery, and two weeks later, in a return visit, her lips were still in good shape without any discomfort.

Hyaluronic acid is the main raw material used for lip filling, and its effect lasts for 6-9 months. According to industrial data, the hyaluronic acid effect in the lip-filling procedure sustains up to half a year for 75% of the customers, going up to 12-18 months if materials such as Sculptra are used.

Lip fillers are used to inject dermal fillers that restore the volume and the natural curve of both lips. Most injections for lip enhancement is hyaluronic acid because it gives almost immediate plumping and a long-lasting effect. Studies show that some 70% of patients prefer their lips’ shape and fullness after undergoing the treatment, while about 90% states some improvement of significant degree three months post-injection.

It costs about 1000-1500 yuan each time for filling up 0.5ml of hyaluronic acid and costs about 2000-2500 yuan per ml for filling with polyll-l-lactic acid.5 Though the cost is higher than that of polylactic acid, its persistence made much higher ROIs to customers in the long run.

During a recent follow-up, a client who opted for polyll-l-lactic acid fillers kept the effect on his lips for almost 14 months and was absolutely pleased with the natural effect and permanency of the results, including saying that these results were longer-lasting and more natural compared to hyaluronic acid.

Chin Contouring

I usually inject 0.5-1ml of hyaluronic acid into the jaw area. Hyaluronic acid filling usually begins in the middle of the jaw and fine-adjusts the shape of the jaw through layers of injections, with the effect lasting generally 6-12 months.

Customer satisfaction with hyaluronic acid reaches 85-90%, and satisfaction with prostheses after implantation is about 80%, according to data from the 2022 Plastic Surgery study. The result of prosthesis implantation differs vastly once, while this procedure has an extensive surgical danger, long convalescence, and high post-operative complications of infection and prosthesis shift. In contrast, filling with hyaluronic acid became the first choice for people now because it’s non-invasive, less recuperation, and natural in effect.

Last year, our team received a client who wanted to improve her jaw line, and after communicating with her, we chose 0.8ml hyaluronic acid for chin shaping. Less than a week after the surgery, her jaw line became softer and more three-dimensional; the customer feedback was very satisfied that the result turned out not only natural but also without a long recovery time. When we returned six months after surgery, the client said the jaw shape was still good and there was no obvious absorption phenomenon.

Chin fillers can nicely improve the shape and volume of the chin, an area that needs more enhancement with people who sport short or flat chins. Studies show that 75% of patients having a chin augmentation procedure will claim noticeable improvement in the balance of the features of their face and enhanced projection of the chin. Adjustment of the chin projection can be achieved to the desired effect by using either hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite.

Because an ISO 13485:2016 guarantee provides assurance in certification for medical devices, the material could be highly safe and technologically stable. The so-called “more molecular weight of hyaluronic acid has a better stability of gel, is suitable for moulding a certain part of jaw part”, on the other side, “A lower molecular weight is suitable to carve the other details on the different parts of the face”.

The price for jaw shaping varies from 0.5-1ml hyaluronic acid each time, which is usually in the price range of 1500-2500 yuan.

Under-eye Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a very fluid filler that could effectively smooth the depression and fine lines in the area of the eye bag. We usually use hyaluronic acid with a higher molecular weight when filling, which can provide longer support and durability. The amount of filling for the underside is usually 0.5ml to 1ml, and if the customer’s dark circles are more serious, the injection volume can be increased or a longer-lasting filling material may be selected.

Data from research published in the journal Plastic Surgery in 2019 stated that concerning periocular filling, the effect of hyaluronic acid was usually maintained for 6-9 months, while autologous fat transplantation could be maintained for as long as 1-2 years. Though more lasting, the complexity in transplantation of autologous fat is higher and its absorption rate higher generally at about 30%-40%. Hyaluronic acid is easy to handle and can be refilled within 6-12 months, so it is regarded as a very effective temporary solution.

A few months ago, I dealt with a case of eye fillers for a 28-year-old woman. The main problem she had was that there was a big depression and dark circles around her eyes; after examination, I decided to use 0.8ml hyaluronic acid to fill her lower eyelid. The effect after filling is very obvious, the depression of the eye bags is significantly reduced, and the overall face appears brighter. During the return visit 2 weeks after surgery, the client said that the result was very natural and there was no swelling or bruising. Six months later, the client came to the clinic for refilling and reported that the results were still good.

Satisfaction rates for peripheral eye fillers among patients were 90%, including 87% with hyaluronic acid and 85% with autologous fat, according to data from a survey in Cosmetic Dermatology Therapy in 2021. Among these, hyaluronic acid is generally accepted because it produces faster results with shorter downtime and is reversible. Compared with traditional pouch surgery, hyaluronic acid filling has a much shorter recovery period, and it only takes 1-3 days to return to normal activities, while the recovery period of pouch surgery is usually 2-3 weeks.

At my clinic, the cost of 0.5ml hyaluronic acid periocular fillings is about 1000-1500 yuan, while the cost of autologous fat transplantation is between 3000-5000 yuan. Despite the higher price of autologous fat, fat transplantation is still a preferred option for clients with long-term needs.
